Despite its size, the Countryman isn’t as good an off-roader as some of its rivals. Its 6.5 inches of ground clearance, all-season tires and lack of hill descent control mean it’s best left to pavement or very light terrain.

The Dacia Duster, the cheapest of this bunch, is even more impressive off-road. With 210mm of ground clearance and the ability to wade through 1.2m of water, it can easily out-gun 4x4s that cost many times as much.

While the Duster’s driving experience isn’t as refined or as sophisticated as some of its rivals, it makes up for this with a huge amount of capability at such a low price point. It also offers plenty of kit that’s usually reserved for much more expensive models.

A 6.5-inch infotainment screen, DAB digital radio and sat nav are standard. An optional reversing camera is available, too. The long and narrow infotainment display feels a little small when compared to some of its rivals, but it has pretty graphics and is easy to use thanks to simple controls.
